Supporters Cheer Ya Kumba Jaiteh as Court Sets Friday to Rule on Her Case

Supporters of Ya Kumba Jaiteh Thursday applauded and cheered her as the Supreme Court adjourned her case to Friday for ruling.

Jaiteh is challenging the decision by President Adama Barrow to revoke her nomination as a Member of Parliament.

Outside the court room, several dozen supporters chanted ‘never again to dictatorship’, as they hugged her and threw her fists into the sky in a show of defiance.

Inside the court, Jaiteh’s lawyers maintained that the revocation of her nomination was unconstitutional, arguing that the president had no powers to revoke the nomination.

The lead counsel for the plaintiff, Borry B.S. Touray also urged the court to bar Jaiteh’s replacement, Foday Gassama from assuming the office of the National Assembly.

In his response, Binga D., a counsel for the defendant said “nominated members has a limited right under the circumstances of the law and the president has all rights to rescind the appointment of any nominated member.”

He said the overall processes of the National Assembly would be derailed if the Supreme Court reversed the decision to revoke the nomination of Jaiteh.

The case has been adjourned to Friday for ruling.
