Super Nawettan defending champions, Serekunda East, kicked off their title defense with a narrow one-nil victory over Bakau at the Independence Stadium on Sa
The first chance of the game fell to Bakau after 15 minutes, Baboucarr Mbenga was unable to stretch enough to poke Lamin Camara’s doubly-deflected effort past Sulayman Drammeh.
Mamburama Sonko headed a corner wide and then, in a rare slick Bakau move, Kebba Sowe had a shot cleared off the line by Alpha Jatta. Serekunda East were dominating the ball, and on the brink of half time, Modou Lamin Nyassi ended with the ball in the net to give East the lead.
Serekunda East continued to dominate after halftime and, 10 minutes after the re-start, Kalipha Kanyi slipped past a couple of defenders to give a low shot from outside the area. East should have doubled their lead in the 68th minute when an error in defense allowed Baboucarr Mbenga through on goal, but he fired over from ten yards out with an empty net at his mercy.
Bakau threw players forward in the final ten minutes, but were unable to find an equalizer as the game ended 1-0 for Serekunda East.
