Senegal’s Prime Minister, Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne said President Macky Sall has won Sunday’s presidential election with 57%.
Though official results have not been announced by the electoral commission, Mr. Dionne said his figures are based on his party’s tallies from voting centers across the country.
He made the announcement at a press briefing at the ruling party’s headquarters in Dakar. It followed a press briefing by the opposition during which Sall’s main contender, Idrissa Seck told his supporters that runoff was inevitable.
Streets in Dakar remain quite as most people stay indoors to follow the declaration of results from polling centers.
A candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the votes to be declared the winner in the first round. A runoff between the two leading candidates will be held on March 24 if there’s no outright winner in the first round.
Meanwhile, Radio France International (RFI) has issued a statement denying accusations that it has reported victory for President Sall.
