The Gambia National Olympic Committee has named Sainey Sissoho as the chef de mission for the 2019 Sal Beach Games in Cape Verde, making her the first Gambian woman to be chosen for this feat.
‘’This means a lot to me. It clearly tells me that my efforts in the promotion of women in sports especially football is being recognized. For now, only Volleyball and athletics confirmed their readiness to participate while we wait for others to come forward’’, she told The Chronicle.
However, Sissoho who also doubles as the Women’s Football Coordinator of The Gambia Football Federation, is responsible for the preparation and management of Gambian athletes and coaches for the 14th– 23rd June event.
“The GNOC is supporting me in this process. They are involving me in all correspondences, I am comfortable working with them for this Games. I’ve been also engaging the teams that confirmed their participation. I am looking forward to seeing a great outing for the Gambian team.”
Cape Verde is hosting the first ever Beach Games following a bid by its Olympic Committee. However, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ACNOA) didn’t hesitate to grant the Island nation the hosting rights simply because of the advantages it offers, particularly in respect of beach and water sports.
