Queen Elisabeth “announces with ‘deep sorrow’ that husband, the Duke of Edinburgh ‘, passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle’ this morning – three weeks after he finished 28-night hospital stay for infection and heart surgery”.
Her Majesty announced her husband’s death, 99 years, at midday today and joins ‘the world in mourning’. Philip was in Windsor after being treated for an infection and pre-existing heart condition for 28 nights.
Born on a kitchen table in Corfu, the prince with Danish, German, Russian, and British blood was carried into exile aged one and overcame an absent father and mother’s trauma to fight for his country.

Philip was the fifth child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and his wife, Princess Alice of Battenberg. Philip grew up apart from his four sisters (right in 1922), three of whom – Margarita, Cecilie and Sophie – married German aristocrats who became members of the Nazi party.
Their mother, Princess Alice (left with Philip in 1960), survived revolution and exile, mental breakdown and religious mania, evincing great personal courage to protect a Jewish family during the war – before turning her back on the trappings of royal life to become a nun. Here, a closer look at the women who shaped Prince Philip’s early life.
The Duke of Edinburgh had kept a low profile since conducting his final solo public engagement in August 2017.
After retiring, Philip spent much of his time at Windsor and Queen’s private Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
The Duke was the longest-serving consort in British history and the oldest serving partner of a reigning monarch.

Philip was known for legendary gaffes and uncensored politically incorrect opinions on various subjects.
The loss of her beloved husband will be one of the most traumatic things the Queen has ever had to face. Together for more than 73 years, the Duke of Edinburgh lived through the ups and downs of the monarch’s life and reign with her. His death also comes after one of the Royal Family’s most testing periods following Harry and Meghan’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
