Press Release – 2021 International Women’s Day Statement From His Excellency Bakary Bunja Dabo

Theme : Women In Leadership : Achieving An Equal Future In A COVID-19 World.

Fellow Gambians, on the occasion of the annual observance of 8th March as the International Women’s Day, we wish to congratulate our mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters for the important role that they play in their respective families and within the Gambian society at large, notably as champions of social cohesion, as well as their immense contribution to national development.

This year’s celebration comes against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic. As at 27th-28th February, 2021, The Gambia registered 4,735 confirmed cases, and 151 deaths.

At this point, it is worth saluting our women folks for taking the lead role in fighting the pandemic by assuming the multiple roles of house managers, pandemic prevention agents, teachers for kids at home, as well as economic actors in spite of all the odds !

As we move forward, in order to consolidate our gains in the fight agains COVID-19 and in consonance with the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day – « Women In Leadership :  Achieving An Equal Future In A COVID-19 World », GFA, as a political party will seek to ensure the promotion of the under-mentioned measures, where applicable,  within (i) its party structures ; and (ii) eventually, a GFA administration.

Vote for women
Provide adequate training and support to women aspiring to hold political positions. 
Promote inclusive participation and leadership in all institutions and at all levels.
Improve Women’s Health
Enhance maternal and child health services, particularly in the rural areas.
Ensure the provision of clean drinking water to all Gambians throughout the country
Empowerment of women
Provide more economic opportunities for women, particularly those in the rural areas.
Ensure that Gambian women benefit from the potential economic and welfare gains to be derived from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Step up the country-wide registration and retention of the girl child in school and modern Madrassas.
Justice for All
Protect the rights of working women (those in the work place and those working from home) ;
Equal work, equal pay, equal opportunities ;
Right to own land.
