The imam of Jarra Kani Kunda, Alhagie Kawsu Saidykhan has been arrested for defying the presidential proclamation that bans all religious congregational gatherings including the Friday prayers, the police spokesperson, ASP Lamin Njie has confirmed.
“He led the Friday prayers and when the police knew about it, they went to get him. So, he’s currently set on bail as the case is under determination at the police level. He has been released. The matter is under determination, so possibly the outcome will tell [regarding the prosecution].
“We want to send a message to the people to understand that this is not an attack on religion but to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We want people to definitely comply, especially religious leaders so that together we can contain the spread of COVID-19.
He was taken to Mansakonko police station where he was later granted a police bail.
