In the aftermath of independence in the latter half of the 1960s, Gambia was at a crossroads of its colonial past and its sovereign future. In its midst, a call to action anthem emerged, “Ligueye Jotna”. Composed by Foday Wadda, the lyrics of “Ligueye Jotna” still remain relevant and a reflection of the state of the nation and her people today.
Wada, was born in Banjul on the 20th January, 1936. He started his primary education in 1940, two years after his both eyes became infected and eventually, he got completely blind.
In an exclusive interview with The Chronicle, the talented Foday Wadda speaks to us in detail about “Ligueye Jotna”, the inspiration behind the song, his life story as a blind man, and The Gambia before and after independence.
