CAF has appointed four Liberian referees to officiate a Champions League match between Gambian league champions Fortune FC and Algerian league runners-up, ES Setif, at the Bakau-Independence Stadium in The Gambia. The match is a preliminary round of the continent’s biggest annual club competition.
Moses Forkpah will take charge as central referee and be assisted by his compatriots Joel W. Doe as Assistant Referee-1, Abraham Fahnbulleh as Assistant Referee-2, and George Rogers as Fourth Official. Referee Rogers was appointed to replace Jerry Yekeh, who resigned as referee of the Liberia Football Association in May of this year.
Saturday’s match will be referee Forkpah’s first-ever CAF Champions League duty since becoming an international referee in December of 2019. He got his first international assignment when he was selected along with compatriot Joel W. Doe to officiate in the WAFU U-17 men’s tournament in Sierra Leone.
On the other hand, Assistant Referee Doe will be making his second appearance in the Champions League, unlike referees Fahnbulleh and Rogers, who have officiated more than two champions league matches.
Fortune FC will be making their debut appearance in the continental club competition after winning the 2020/21 Gambian First Division league season.
ES Setif, on the other hand, qualified for the Champions League as runners-up of the 2020/21 Algerian league. They are one of the most successful clubs in Algeria, having won the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 eight times and the Algerian Cup a record of eight times. They are also one of only three Algerian clubs to have won the CAF Champions League, winning it twice in 1988 and 2014.
