John Charles B. Mendy alias JCB Mendy has been released on bail, 24 hours after being charged with murder.
Mendy was arrested Monday by the police along the Gambia-Senegal border town of Giboroh on suspicion of trying to abscond from the country. His arrest was ordered by the Ministry of Justice which accused him of being outrageously dishonest in his testimony at the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission about his role in several incidents of violence.
“Mr. Mendy’s “outrageous dishonesty”, in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, betrayed a lack of empathy towards the families of the victims and the unwillingness to cooperate and assist in the reconciliation process in the country,” the ministry said in a statement.
Mendy appeared before the TRRC in March and confessed to taking part in the shooting of soldiers accused of coup plot on the 11 November 1994. He denied knowledge of or taking part in multiple other killings.
He left the Police Headquarters in Banjul Friday morning after being granted bail.
