At 18, Fatou “Toufah” Jallow was a beauty queen in pursuit of furthering her education. Along the way, she came face to face with Gambia’s then president, Yahya Jammeh, who invited her to his palace, and promised to help her achieve her career goals. But after a few personal meetings, Toufah was allegedly assaulted and raped by Jammeh after she rejected his marriage offer. Now, the 23 year-old is publicly telling her story, hoping to encourage other women who have experienced sexual violence to speak out.
