The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has confirmed the death of Journalist Sise Sawaneh after her involvement in a car accident in Kiang, Lower River Region on Wednesday afternoon.
“The journalist died this afternoon, her family and colleagues confirmed. She was involved in a car accident that happened in Kiang and claimed the lives of two others,” the statement from the GPU stated.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Until her death, Sise worked as a reporter at the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS). She previously worked at various media organisations, including The Standard, Today Newspaper and Star FM.
“The committed and hardworking young journalist of great promise is already missed by her colleagues. She was a wonderful human being and an excellent professional. Her death is a great loss to the media and country. Rest in Peace, Sise Sawaneh, while your spirit lives on.” the statement added.
Ms. Sawaneh was pursuing her first degree in journalism at the University of The Gambia. On Wednesday morning, before embarking on a journey that took her life, she was seen at the anniversary marking the Founder’s Day of the Journalism School of the University.
Apart from journalism, Sise is also a widely known activist who defended the rights of women. She has attended series of fora, locally and internationally, as a panelist to talk about pertinent issues.
