The Catholic Bishop of Banjul, His Lordship, Gabriel Mendy, Cssp, Ph.D. has announced the passing of one of the first Gambian Priests, Fr. Peter Gomez.
In a terse release from the Diocese, it was revealed that Fr. Peter who was stationed at St.Kizitos Parish passed on early this morning.
Quite a tough two weeks for this Diocese dealing with the death of one of its Spiritan Priests, Fr. Louis Mendy who passed on in Scotland.
Fr. Peter Gomez attended Banjul’s St Augustine’s High School and trained for the Priesthood at St.Paul’s Seminary in Bong County, Gbarnga in Liberia. He was ordained to the Priesthood in April of 1985 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau by His Lordship, Michael J.Cleary, Cssp, DD of blessed memory.
Gomez who was soft-spoken was an excellent Preacher who according to former Parishioners was good in relating his sermons to the scriptures of the day. He spent part of the early 2000s on Sabaathical in Dublin.
He also, alongside his mate and friend, Fr. Anthony Gabisi, were the first Vicars General of Gambian origin. He has served in many parishes in the Diocese. May his gentle soul, rest in peace.
