GABECE Examination: 12 Boys, 7 Girls Notch an Aggregate of 6

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MOBSE) has released the 2021 GABECE Examination result, showing 12 boys and seven girls with an aggregate of 6 in this year’s examination.

The results indicate an overall good general performance as per the number of passes. Twenty-six thousand one hundred forty-seven students sat for the examination.

Comparing 2020 to 2021 in the number of passes in the four core subjects. Passes in English has increased from 11,419 to 14,254, math from 6,589, science from 12,863 to 14,370 and SES from 14,811 to 16,513” the statistics indicate.

Despite the significant passing performance, this year’s results have also seen a shortfall of 7 students with an aggregate of 6. From 26 in 2020, the number decreased to 19 in 2021.

Our concentrate as a sector is not on the ‘fliers’ when we say fliers, those students with aggregate 6. It’s good to have an aggregate of 6, but it is better to have everybody having an aggregate of 6. But, if we cannot have everybody having aggregate 6, what is important for us is to widen the pass numbers and lessen the failure number,” said Louis Moses Mendy, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic education.

The Permanent Secretary said his ministry is committed to minimizing the school fail rate as part of their mission as a sector. He congratulated his regional directorate, citing a comparison between the performance of public and private schools.

“Often, we think public schools are not good enough as compared to private schools. But the results are proven otherwise. The results indicate that out of those with an aggregate of 6, we have five private schools that got an aggregate of 6, and we have 11 public schools that got an aggregate of 6,” he added.

This year’s results also show a significant performance of schools within the rural area despite limited resources and accessibility.
