Feature – Omar Jaiteh, a Modern Center-back With a Future

Born in 1998, Omar Jaiteh is one of the players lined up for the second year in a row in the pre-season of CD Tenerife, a “Segunda Division” Spanish football club based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands. This time he has a new coach, Luis Miguel Ramis, who replaces Fran Fernández.

Tenerife recruited the Gambian center-back in the 2019/20 campaign. Last summer, he made the jump to the first team during the preparatory phase because of his promising future. Jaiteh is a right-handed footballer who mainly stands out in the aerial game. He relies on qualities such as his build and strength and his ability to take out the ball. He is, therefore, a fairly physical central defender, adapted to current modern football, with a great projection on the future.

During his last run of the 2020/21 season, he played 14 games for Mazinho in the third division, even scoring two goals. As Blue and White’s youth football sports director Sesé Rivero explained at the time, Omar Jaiteh’s irruption on the Spanish island stems from “a project in the Gambia with the CIO group. The collaboration allowed us to see footballers. I traveled to the Gambia with Toño Hernández, and we saw several exciting footballers. Omar was one of them,” he said.
