Debutant James Gomez Scores as Gambia Beats Togo 1-0

The CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) debutants, “The Scorpions” of The Gambia, had a victorious opposition (1-0) at the Turkish Emirhan Sports Center of Antalya for their first international friendly match after a historical qualification to play Cameroon hosted African Cup of Nations in January.

Coach Tom Saintfiet’s boys, under Babucarr Sanneh as Captain, had luck in the second half by debutant defender James Gomez who scored with a header.

Gomez is also the Former U20 Captain. He is a WAFU U20 bronze medalist in Conakry 2019 and WAFU U20 gold winner in Senegal which he captained and lifted the trophy.

The Gambia has a 26-man squad for their camp in Turkey, with nine new candidates to make it to the Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon in 2022.

After beating Niger on Saturday (2-0) and Togo today with  (1-0), the Scorpions are bracing up against the Dardanians of Kosovo on Friday at the same venue in Turkey.

The Scorpions will have one more friendly lined up against Les coelacanths of   Comoros.
