The embassy of China in Banjul has conducted cultural and acrobatic performances on Tuesday night to celebrate their upcoming lunar new year.
Senior government officials including Foreign Affairs Minister have graced the event as well as the business community.
The Chinese Ambassador, Ma Jianchun said the spring festival which falls on the 25th of January, celebrates the brand new start of the whole year, stating that it is the time they bid farewell to the old and usher in the new year.
“With the theme of ‘a splendid performance of Chinese silk road’, the gala is particularly featured with China’s Dunhuang and Gansu culture, which derives from Northwest China and the golden location of the Silk Road,” he said.
“I am pleased to note that while scaling higher heights in the bilateral practical cooperation and high-level exchanges, we are making as much efforts for mutual understanding and friendship between our two peoples,” Ma Jianchun added.
The Gambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mamadou Tangara hails the performance of Chinese Gansu dance theatre and Gansu acrobatic troupe who performed on night.
“Their performance tonight reflects the strong and deep relationship between The Gambia and China and will further deepen people-to-people exchange, as well as promote cultural exchange and understanding between our two peoples.”
The Gambia resumed bilateral ties with China in 2016 recognising the One-China policy following the severe diplomatic tie with Taiwan.
Since then, the Asian country has awarded a series of projects costing millions of dollars including the recently launched conference centre which was named after the founding president Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara.
China is also currently constructing roads and bridges in the Upper River Region (URR) to ease the transportation in the area.
