Chevening Alumni Conference

The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s flagship Chevening Scholarship programme continues to attract future leaders from around the world and is open to applicants from diverse backgrounds across different sectors. The deadline for applications for Masters’ studies in the 2020 / 2021 Academic Year is November 5, 2019 and potential candidates are encouraged to refer to the website www.chevening.org

for information on how to apply.

One of the most important aspects of the Chevening Scholarship programme is the opportunity to be part of a global alumni of over 50,000. Each country has its own alumni network and in recent years the Gambia Chevening Alumni network has gone from strength to strength. To celebrate their individual and collective successes, now each alumnus is back in The Gambia and making a positive contribution to their country.

The Gambia Chevening Alumni recently organised a conference to exchange ideas under the theme “Building a Brighter Future”.

Through a series of presentations and lively question and answer sessions, the alumni and guests debated how their studies in the UK, and employment in different sectors, have influenced them and provoked innovative and constructive ideas as to how to fulfil their aspirations for The Gambia’s future. Realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals and delivery of the National Development Plan were running themes across the conference, from emphasis on the importance of quality early education and equal access to healthcare, to the potential of technology to improve service delivery and the benefits of increased public-private partnerships to accelerate the development agenda. The Alumni demonstrated how their Chevening experience is helping to shape their approach to meeting the challenges facing The Gambia as an emerging democracy, and hope that through their example others will feel inspired to follow in their footsteps.
