Gambia Volleyball is celebrating another solid year of growth, as The Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) supported them with a modern outdoor volleyball floor.
It could be recalled that FIVB, Volleyball’s world’s governing body recently launched a development project platform for national federations/ associations especially from developing countries to send in proposals for support. In 2019, The Gambia developed a proposal for this facility and eventually got it approved.

The President of The Gambia Volleyball Federation, Bai Dodou Jallow told The Chronicle that the new facility will actively improve the sport in the country. “This is a good development for our sport, “he said. The volleyball Infrastructure in the country is poor. All the floors we have are concrete and poses some threat to player safety and also limits the performance level of athletes.”
The facility will be stationed at the Independence stadium in Bakau where league games and other volleyball activities will be held. Henceforth the place will be become the main center of volleyball activities in The Gambia.
“With this facility, high performance with optimum safety of athletes is guaranteed, “Jallow said. The facility will help optimize our preparation to international competition. It will expose our players to synthetic surfaces which is the norm internationally.”

Over the years, The Gambia have only been hosting beach volleyball games and qualifiers, but with the arrival of this modern outdoor facility, Jallow believes the country will be competitive in bidding for big international outdoor games. “Given our development trend I also think it’s a timely development. In addition we will be competitive in bidding to host International competitions.”
