The Communications unit of the Gambia Police Force has on Thursday announced that Abdoulie Sanyang is officially the Inspector General of Police. IGP Abdoulie Sanyang replaces the late Alhagie Mamur Jobe, who passed away weeks ago.
Recent rumors and anticipation about the identity of the new IGP jammed discussions in the police department and sparked a fierce debate in social media. Most commentators insisted on appointing a new IGP that will drive the needed reforms in the police.
IGP Sanyang is a career and seasoned officer with over a decade of policing experience. Like the late Jobe, Sanyang rose through the police ranks to his current position. His colleagues in the police describe Sanyang as an officer who commands public trust and acceptance in the troops. They also define the new IGP as “bold, impartial, resilient” and, most importantly, not adversely mentioned at the TRRC.
A few days ago, he launched a nationwide police operation to prevent crime in The Gambia, and the initiative registered remarkable success.
